Alga Norte Dog Park Location & Hours
Alga Norte Community Park is located in southeast Carlsbad. From the 5 freeway you can exit on either Poinsettia Lane or Palomar Airport Road to reach the park. Alga Norte Park is on the corner of Poinsettia Lane and Alicante Road near Bressi Ranch in Carlsbad. Once you reach the dog park, there is ample parking. The dog enclosure is on the opposite side of the skate park.

Features of Alga Norte Dog Park In Carlsbad
Alga Norte dog park is a 30,000 square foot enclosed playground for dogs. Some of its features include:
- 3 separate gated enclosures: One for small dogs, one for large dogs, and another space for dog training or dogs that might not want company
- A partially shaded area with large picnic table
- Obstacles for dogs to climb on and run through
- Fountains with drinking water for dogs
- Park benches throughout the space for seating
- Doggie poop bags and trash cans for hygiene
Parking at the Carlsbad Dog Park
There is ample free parking at the Alga Norte Community Park. However, parking can be a challenge in this Carlsbad neighborhood on Thursday and Friday nights because of youth sports. In summer, Alga Norte hosts concerts in the park, so check the events calendar website to avoid those loud, crowded evenings. Concerts are not a dog-friendly activity in Carlsbad.

What to Expect at Alga Norte
When you arrive at the dog park, enter the first gate and then proceed through a second gate into the large or small dog areas. Next, enjoy the sunshine and fresh air as your four-legged friend has time to sniff and run to their heart’s content.
There are several obstacles for dogs to enjoy. There are two artificial logs and a large plastic tunnel to crawl through. In addition, there is a sitting/tricks training platform, adjustable ladder apparatus, two incline/decline ramps and hoops for jumping practice.
The busiest times at the dog park are mornings and evenings. If you are looking for socialization, this is a great time to visit. If you have a dog that is easily overwhelmed or older, visit in the mid-afternoon for a calmer experience.

What Sizes of Dogs Can Visit Alga Dog Park?
The enclosures for large and small dogs are separated by chain link fencing. One side is for dogs over 35 pounds and the other is for smaller dogs. I often see smaller, energetic dogs on the “large” side if they want to romp and play. Use your discretion for the proper place for your pup.

When you visit the dog park, it’s important to adhere to the City of Carlsbad’s dog park rules for everyone’s enjoyment and safety.
- Do not bring your dog if they are aggressive towards people or other dogs.
- Dog owners are required to maintain control of their pet to avoid bites, aggression, or property damage.
- Dogs must be vaccinated against rabies after four months of age.
- You must have a license for your dog (unless you are a tourist or visitor).
- If your dog is sick, do not bring them to the park.
- Young partially-vaccinated puppies should not visit the park.
- Avoid bringing female dogs in estrus.
Things to Consider When You Visit Alga Dog Park
When you visit the dog park, prepare to meet dogs that are herders, humpers, toy stealers and droolers. But, that is all part of the fun at the dog park!
It’s best to wear closed toed shoes and clothes that can get dirty. I have been covered in dog saliva and jumped on with dirty paws here.
It’s advisable to bring children at your own risk. Some dogs forget their manners and jump on little ones knocking them over.

Alga Norte Dog Park Compared to Poinsettia Dog Park
When comparing off leash dog parks in San Diego, it’s important to consider many factors. Park size, ground cover, obstacles, parking, and the local community affect your experience.
Alga Norte Dog Park is larger than Poinsettia Dog Park and offers more obstacles for agility training. Although Poinsettia Dog Park is 27, 700 square feet, compared to Alga Norte Dog Park at 30,000 square feet, it feels much smaller.
Another benefit of the dog park at Alga Norte is it has wood chips covering the ground. Poinsettia Dog Park is covered with patchy grass and dirt, so I find my dog gets much dirtier when we visit Poinsettia Dog Park. When it rains, Poinsettia Park gets very muddy.
Poinsettia Park’s dog area is uneven with a small hill, so dogs cannot run back and forth to catch their ball quite as easily. In addition, Poinsettia Park does not have many obstacles to play on.
Additionally, parking at Poinsettia Park tends to be more crowded. The tennis and pickleball courts nearby attract a crowd. Youth sports also make parking a challenge on Thursday and Friday evenings.
In my opinion, the dog-loving community at Alga Norte is one of the best reasons to visit. Juno and I look forward to seeing both human and canine “regulars” to socialize and establish friendships.

Alga Norte dog park closes at sunset which differs by season. This is not to be confused with Alga Norte Park that is open until 10:00 pm daily.
