Debunking Piranhas Myths
Before venturing into the jungle to go fishing for piranha, I did some piranha research. I stumbled upon several articles that discussed a possible explanation why piranhas garnered their “deadly” reputation.
After Theodore Roosevelt visited Brazil in 1913, he wrote Through the Brazilian Wilderness. He describes piranha attacks that skeletonized a cow in minutes.
Apparently, in an attempt to impress the president, locals nearly starved a large shoal of piranha so they would “perform” in an aggressive manner. This is one of the possible reasons there is much fear and confusion about piranha.
“They are the most ferocious fish in the world. . . . They will snap a finger off a hand incautiously trailed in the water; they mutilate swimmers—in every river town in Paraguay there are men who have been thus mutilated; they will rend and devour alive any wounded man or beast; for blood in the water excites them to madness.”
