The Drach Caves of Mallorca are a series of four massive subterranean caves and tunnels. These caves include the Cave of Luis Salvador, Black Cave, White Cave, and Cave of the French.
The Caves of Drach are full of interesting rock formations called speleothems. Inside the caves, find intricate stalactite, stalagmites, straws, columns, and flow stones. This karst region continues to metamorphosize as water drips and erodes the brilliant landscape.
Additionally, you will see one of the biggest underground lakes in the world! Hidden in the depths of the cave, Lake Martel is 383 feet long (116 metres), 98 feet wide and 13-39 feet deep.
How Were the Coves del Drach Formed?
Experts speculate that the Caves de Drach formed from 5.3 to 23 million years ago in the Miocene Epoch. Over eons, the Mediterranean Sea etched its way through the caves. The continuous process of erosion, weathering and dissolution produced the magnificent landscape we see today.

- 1338– According to historical documents, the Cuevas Del Drach Mallorca were discovered. Yet, it took centuries before the further exploration of the caves occurred.
- 1632– The first name “Drach” appeared in the book “History of the Kingdom of Mallorca” by Dameto.
- 1784-1836-The caves were cited by famous historians and geographers. These include Cardinal Despuig, Berard and Solà and Joaquín María Bover.
- 1880- explorer M.F. Will drew the first plan of the caves. Importantly, he mapped the White and Black Caves (Cova Blanca and Cova Negra).
- 1896- the “father of Speleology”, Édouard-Alfred Martel discovered a large underground lake. and two additional caves. Lake Martel, bears his name.
- 1922-1935 historical information is vague, but electricity was supplied to the caves and classical musical concerts began at the site.

During your tour, all the ticket holders enter at specific times and walk through the exhibit in unison. Therefore, the more crowded it is, the harder it is to see the beautiful rock formations.
Seeking Stamps Tip: The best time to visit the Drach Caves is either the first or last tours of the day. These times are less crowded, which makes the experience more enjoyable.
Tips for the Caves of Drach: What to Wear
The Drach Caves can be chilly, even on a hot summer day. The average temperature inside the caves is 62-69 degrees Fahrenheit with 90-95% relative humidity. (cuevasdeldrach.com)
It’s a good idea to bring a light sweater and wear sturdy shoes. You will walk and climb stairs on damp, slippery surfaces.
How to Get to the Mallorca Caves
The Drach Caves location is simple to find. From the Palma de Mallorca city center, take the MA-15 for about an hour. Follow the signs to Manacor and the Porto Cristo Caves. Make sure to go to Cuevas Del Drach NOT Cuevas Del Hams.
To visit the Drach Caves by bus, take bus number 412. Buses run to the Mallorca caves several times per day. The bus to Caves of Drach takes about an hour and 15 minutes. It costs 8-15 Euros.
To reach the Drach Caves by taxi it’s approximately 80 Euros for 1-4 people (round trip from the airport).
Parking at the Drach Caves
Most of Mallorca is congested with limited parking. Drach Caves parking is the exception. There is a large parking area designated for the attraction. The best part of all- parking at the Drach Caves is free!
Facilities at Cuevas Drach Mallorca
On site, there are restrooms, a souvenir shop, and a small cafeteria style restaurant. They serve pizzas, salads, and alcoholic drinks. There are also picnic areas near the parking lot if you prefer to bring food with you.

Once you arrive, buy your tickets at the ticket office or proceed to the separate queue until your reservation time.
If you purchased tickets online, simply download your tickets to your phone and scan the QR code at the entrance gate.

What to Expect During the Drach Caves Tour
All day tours are the same, regardless of the time you enter. They are self-guided, however staff is there to enforce the rules and keep the crowd moving.
The tour consists of walking along the dimly lit pathway through a circuit. The walk is not strenuous, but the distance is about 0.75 miles and there is a slope of 80 feet. The return journey has stairs to climb. We did not find the tour challenging, but we witnessed a few elderly people that had to stop and catch their breath up the stairs.
The Drach Caves excursion concludes with a moving classical music performance and the option to take a short boat trip back to the entrance.
Sights in the Dragon Caves Mallorca
Luis Salvador Cave (Cova de Lluís Salvador)
When you enter the enchanting cave system you might feel like an explorer yourself! Prepare to be mesmerized!
You begin your Drach cave tour in the Luis Salvado Cave. It was. named after Archduke Luis Salvador who was an explorer and pioneer in Mallorca. This was the last cave discovered in 1896.
As you enter the cave prepare to be awestruck at its massive size and beauty . Inside, you will feel a wave of humidity as the cave air engulfs you. The surroundings are dimly lit and the sound of dripping water gives you thrill as you spelunk deeper into the caves.
Los Banos de Diana (Diana Baths) & La Bandera (The Flag)
Next, wind your way along the roped path to a small lake called Diana Baths. Adjacent to Los Banos de Diana, you will see a colorful rock formation known as La Bandera or “The Flag”. The array of colors are from various mineral deposits dripping down the rock formation.
El Castillo en Ruinas (Ruined Castle) and Monte Nevado (Snowy Mount)
As you continue along the route, you see the “Ruined Castle” or El Castillo en Ruinas.
Just past the Ruined Castle, you will see the “Snowy Mount” or Monte Nevado. This is a rock formation that is colored white from calcium minerals leaching through the rock.
Canal Azul (Blue Channel)
Next, you reach the waters of the Blue Channel or Canal Azul. This is part of Lake Martel, which you will see more of in a few minutes.
Keep your eyes peeled for interesting white candle-like rock formations that align the path.
Lake Martel and Musical Performance in the Amphitheater
At the bottom of the walkway, you will reach Lake Martel and the amphitheater. Take a seat and enjoy a beautiful classical musical concert.
Next, the lights dim and you can feel the palpable energy as patrons eagerly wait for the Caves of Drach music performance. In the distance, the faint haunting melody begins. As the small boat rows closer, you see the musicians and their instruments. The quartet is composed of violins, a cello and harpsichord. The music and twinkling lights are meant to represent a sunrise over the lake.
You could hear a pin drop as our group sat mesmerized by the beautiful melody. This was a unique and moving experience.
La Cueva de los Franceses (Cave of the French)
After the orchestra concludes, you have the option to ride in the small row boat to the entrance or walk back.
As you return, you enter the Cave of the French or La Cueva de los Franceses. Here you will ascend a large staircase. As you climb towards the exit, feel the rapid change of humidity and temperature.

If you have additional time in your itinerary, make a stop in the charming port town of Port Cristo. Things to do in Porto Cristo include outdoor activities, beaches, dining and shopping.

If you haven’t had your fill of cave excursions, visit the 10 million year old Cuevas dels Hams. These caves are also known as the “Fishhook Caves” because the rock formations inside resemble fish hooks. The tour consists of the Classic Cave, outdoor Round Cave and Blue Cave. We didn’t have a chance to visit the Hams Caves, but let me know if you visit in the comments.

Following your underground exploration, visit a gorgeous nearby beach. Cala Romantica is just 8 minutes away on the MA-4014. Cala Romantica has ample parking and easy access to the shore.
