Although Encinitas has been named one of the world’s top surf towns, the city is often overshadowed by the Gaslamp District in downtown San Diego, the luxury of La Jolla, or the attractions near Balboa Park. However, Encinitas has a relaxed charm that you don’t find in many San Diego cities.
With things to do including botanical gardens, gorgeous beaches and a quaint downtown filled with restaurants and bars, Encinitas is worth visiting. If you are looking to enjoy outdoor activities in a city that is wellness focused and free spirited, with a relaxed surf culture- check out Encinitas.

How to Get to Encinitas, California
Encinitas is part of northern San Diego County. It’s situated along the Pacific Ocean, approximately 26 miles from downtown San Diego. Carlsbad, Solana Beach, and Cardiff are adjacent cities.
Orange County is approximately 50 miles from Encinitas and Los Angeles is about 90 miles away (depending on your exact starting point).
The nearest major airport to Encinitas is San Diego International Airport (SAN). From the airport, you can rent a car, take a shuttle, or use rideshare services to travel to Encinitas.
Encinitas is easily accessible by car via the 5 Freeway, which runs along the coast. Depending on your location, you can also use local highways such as Highway 78 or Highway 101 to reach Encinitas.
Once you’ve arrived, you can use local transportation options such as the coaster train, rideshare services, taxis, or rental bikes to navigate the city and explore its attractions. However, I highly recommend renting a car, if possible.
Best Things to Do in Encinitas, CA
1. Visit Moonlight State Beach
Without question, the number one attraction in Encinitas are the beaches! One of my absolute favorite beaches is Moonlight Beach. At Moonlight, you will find a wide, sandy beach perfect for basking in the sun.
One of the best characteristics of Moonlight Beach is it’s a great place to swim and surf. Waves tend to be calm and there are lifeguards on duty (but always pay attention to warning flags and tides). Additionally, Moonlight Beach is a great spot for beginner surfers. You can’t visit Encinitas without soaking up the sun and waves at this top Southern California beach!
Plus, Moonlight Beach has plenty of amenities to offer beach-goers. It’s ADA accessible with bathrooms, showers, firepits, and ample parking. Unlike many North County, San Diego beaches Moonlight has concessions and beach rentals just steps from the sand. Plus, kids love playing on the nearby playground and sand volleyball courts. It’s no wonder San Diegans consider Moonlight the best beach in Encinitas.

2. Get Cheerful at Dave’s Rock Garden
A unique thing to do in Encinitas, is check out Dave’s Rock Garden. In 2015 a local resident transformed this once weed-filled lot into a cheerful community garden. This whimsical garden filled with hand-painted rocks is sure to make you smile. Make a quick stop here when you visit Moonlight Beach- it’s just up the street.

As you cruise south along the 101, make sure to visit the charming La Paloma Theater. This historic theater opened its doors in 1928 and is still operational today. A fun thing to do in Encinitas is catch a movie at La Paloma!
4. Hit the Waves for Epic Surfing in Encinitas
Encinitas is a surfing mecca known for its world-class beach breaks. Whether you’re a seasoned pro, or a beginner looking to catch your first wave, Encinitas offers something for surfers of all levels. For those looking to improve their skills, there are surf schools and board rentals available nearby.
One of the most popular surf spots in Encinitas is Swami’s Beach. Named after the adjacent Self-Realization Fellowship Meditation Gardens, Swami’s offers perfect waves for intermediate and advanced surfers. Additionally, Swami’s is also known for its stunning views and vibrant sunsets, making it a favorite spot for both surfers and beachgoers.
In addition to Swami’s Beach, other popular surf spots in Encinitas include Stone Steps Beach, Beacon’s, Grandview Beach, and D Street. Each spot offers its own unique vibe and wave conditions, ensuring that there’s always somewhere new to explore.

5. Wander at the San Diego Botanic Garden
Another family-friendly thing to do in Encinitas, is explore the San Diego Botanic Garden. Here you can stroll through 37 acres of gardens and foliage along a scenic four mile trail. Visitors will enjoy the native gardens, towering bamboo and whimsical children’s gardens. This is one of the best things to do in Encinitas with kids.

Take a step back into history at the San Dieguito Heritage Museum. It was founded in 1988 and displays photographs, restored buildings, and artifacts of the San Dieguito region. This interesting family-friendly museum in Encinitas is worth a quick visit to experience “farm animal interactions and hands-on history”.

7. Tee Off at the Encinitas Ranch Golf Course
Just up the road from the botanical garden, you can soak up the sunshine and fresh ocean breezes on the golf course in Encinitas. Ranked as one of the best public golf courses in San Diego, golfing at Encinitas Ranch can’t be missed.
My husband is an avid golfer and Encinitas Ranch Golf Course is one of his favorite courses in San Diego. Not only does it offer gorgeous distant ocean views, but it’s fun for any level of golfer.

8. Explore the Coffee Culture in Encinitas

9. Drive By the Encinitas Boat Houses
For an unusual thing to do in Encinitas, check out the quirky boathouses. This pair of 1100 square foot boat-shaped houses were built in the 1920’s. Despite their realistic appearance, the SS Encinitas and SS Moonlight have never been to sea. It’s worth a quick drive by to see these funky historical landmarks.

You can view the home of the Encinitas Historical Society which is tucked away in a humble one room schoolhouse from 1883. Interestingly, this is the oldest structure in Encinitas. Discover the transformation of Encinitas, from its humble origins as a fishing village to the vibrant city it has become today, through captivating photographs and exhibits.

11. Shop in Encinitas
If you love to shop, Encinitas has plenty of options. On weekends check out the fresh produce and artisanal goods at the Leucadia 101 Farmers Market. If you prefer local boutiques and thrift stores, stroll through downtown Encinitas. To shop for big brands such as Madewell, Nike and Anthropologie go to the Carlsbad Forum Shopping Center (near Encinitas).

If you haven’t had your fill of panoramic ocean views, go to one of the viewpoints in Encinitas. These are my favorite spots to watch vibrant San Diego sunsets.
- D Street Viewpoint Park is located at 404 West D Street Encinitas CA 92024- this has small picnic benches and stairs down to the water.
- Encinitas Viewpoint Park at 56 East D Street Encinitas, CA 92024- here you will find a playground and local dog park with distant ocean views.
- 351 West H Street Encinitas, CA 92024- this spot has a row of benches that is perfect for gazing over the beach below.
- I street Vista Point located at 383-499 West I Street Encinitas, CA 92024. This is a small, secluded location.
- J Street Viewpoint located on J Street Encinitas CA 92024 (just past 3rd Street) offers a serene viewpoint.
13. Meditate at the Encinitas Self Realization Fellowship Hermitage
For anyone seeking serenity, visit the Self Realization Hermitage and Meditation Garden. Here you can wander among koi ponds and colorful plants while you soak up the gorgeous vistas. This hidden gem offers a lovely place for prayer, meditation and solace without having to leave the city. Just look for the three golden lotus temples along Highway 101. This is a free thing to do in Encinitas, but donations are welcomed.

Did you know that in 1974, the Bahne Surfboard Shop in Encinitas, CA led the path of skateboarding innovation? The company is credited as the original skateboard manufacturer and sold Tony Hawk his first skateboard! So, make sure to go skateboarding in Encinitas!
The Encinitas Skate Plaza, or Poods Park, is a favorite among locals. With bowls, pools, and varied terrain it’s great for beginners and expert skateboarders alike.

15. Take Hot Air Balloon Rides Over the San Diego Coast
One of the best ways to enjoy the San Diego coastline is to view it from a scenic hot air balloon ride. During the summer months, you can see hot air balloons filling the horizon over Del Mar and Encinitas. If you aren’t afraid of heights, I highly recommend trying it!
16. Play Pickleball and Tennis at Bobby Riggs Racket & Paddle Club
Pickleball is all the rage, right?! Well, if you want to improve your skills or get in a quick game visit Bobby Riggs Paddle Club.
If the name rings a bell, Riggs was a tennis champion and opponent of Billie Jean King in the famous “Battle of the Sexes” event. Tennis fans will enjoy checking out the Bobby Riggs memorabilia here.
Additionally, there are numerous courts for play, leagues, and lessons. Grab a few friends and book a reservation online for just $16.

San Diego is home to numerous craft breweries offering a variety of locally brewed beers and ales. Here are a few notable places to grab a pint of craft beer in Encinitas:
- Duckfoot Brewing– an innovative brewery offering gluten-reduced beer.
- Modern Times– This is one of our favorite places. It’s a brewery and coffee roaster.
- Biergarten-This restaurant is a fun place to grab wine or one of the 25 beers they have on tap.
- The Brewer’s Tap Room– It has an authentic tap room feel and offers a wide selection of hard to find nano brews.
- Encinitas Ale House is a family owned and operated bar and restaurant where you feel like one of the family.
- Culture Brewing Company– Brings people together with beer and community events such as art shows and fundraisers.
18. Try an Art Class at Lux Art Institute (ICA North)
In 2021 Lux Art Institute merged with the San Diego Art Institute forming the Institute of Contemporary Art San Diego. Their mission is to promote artists, education and the community.

Honestly, many parts of North County, San Diego are a bit sleepy. However, if you are seeking nightlife you need to check out the bars in Encinitas. Places like the Roxy, Death by Tequila, Union Kitchen & Tap, and Shelter are just a few of the fun spots to party in Encinitas. Another nearby venue for live music is the Belly Up Tavern that locals love.

20. Practice Yoga
Encinitas has a strong emphasis on health and wellness, and caters to locals seeking a balanced and mindful lifestyle. With its bohemian vibe and free spirited energy, Encinitas is a haven for yogis of all levels.
In fact, Encinitas is home to numerous yoga studios that offer a variety of classes ranging from gentle flow to power vinyasa. In addition to traditional studio classes, many local parks and beaches in Encinitas also host outdoor yoga sessions and surf yoga. If you haven’t tried it yet, practicing yoga with the sound of crashing waves is an experience like no other!
21. Pet Farm Animals at Sugar Sweet Farm
Animal lovers will love spending time at Sugar Sweet Farm. This is an organic, family run hobby farm in Encinitas. Immerse yourself in farm life, petting animals such as burros and llamas. If you didn’t get your fill of yoga already, you can try goat yoga! I had the opportunity to take my kids to this adorable location and they loved it!

22. Step Back in Time at Bunman Ranch
History buffs will enjoy another historic state landmark in Encinitas, called Bunman Ranch. This 10 acre ranch dates back to 1886. It is one of the few remaining intact homesteads in San Diego County. On the property you can view barns dating back to the 1800’s, a bunkhouse, and more.

23. Camp at San Elijo State Beach
For outdoor enthusiasts, camping at San Elijo State Beach is a must-do activity in Encinitas. the campground has 171 camping sites along the bluffs above the glimmering ocean. Although this area can be crowded and a bit noisy from the nearby streets, the views can’t be beat.

24. Decorate the Cardiff Kook
As you reach the border of southern Encinitas, you will find the beloved “Cardiff Kook”. This is a six foot tall bronze statue of a surfer. Although the sculpture is officially named “Magic Carpet Ride”, the sculpture is mocked by locals for its awkward depiction of a surfer.
All year long, this surfing statue is adorned with various decorations and outfits in a fun-loving and celebratory spirit. From holidays to graduation, the Cardiff Kook brings happiness to the surrounding area. Make sure to take a quick picture at this popular photo spot in Encinitas!

25. Explore Annie’s Canyon Trail & the San Elijo Lagoon Ecological Reserve
Last, but certainly not least, visit the San Elijo Ecological Reserve. This 979 acre preserve is one of San Diego’s largest wetlands. Make sure to check out the San Elijo Lagoon Nature Center during your visit.
For one of the best hiking spots in San Diego, visit Annie’s Canyon Trail. This beautiful slot canyon is an easy hike for beginners and no special gear is required.
When you visit, I suggest going through the slot canyon, or right side of the trail. The terrain is uneven and steep, but I didn’t find the hike difficult.
For an easier way to the viewpoint, take the trail to the left which has switchbacks to the top. However, you don’t get to experience the interior of the canyon like the other trail.

Best Time to Visit Encinitas
Fortunately, Encinitas is a year-round destination. The months of July and August mark the peak of tourist season in Encinitas. However, I think the best time to visit is in September and October. During early fall, the summer crowds wane, the weather is sunny, and the ocean temperatures are warm.
Seeking Stamps Tip: San Diego tends to have gloomy conditions we call “May Gray” and “June Gloom”. You can certainly still visit during this time, it’s common for the sun to emerge later in the afternoon.

Encinitas has a wide selection of restaurants with a diverse array of cuisines. Some of my favorites are:
- Herb and Sea– An upscale seafood restaurant perfect for date-night.

- Alce 101- A trendy tequileria and farm-to-table Southwest restaurant.
- Valentina– An adorable bistro and wine bar.

Where to Stay in Encinitas
Honestly, Encinitas hotels tend to be on the “rustic” side and could really use some higher-end options. The exceptions are my two favorite hotels:
- The Inn at Moonlight Beach– a cozy 5 suite bed and breakfast accommodation adjacent to Moonlight Beach and close to downtown Encinitas.
- Alila Marea Beach Resort– This luxurious resort is perched above South Ponto Beach (bordering Carlsbad). This is an excellent choice if you plan to visit Carlsbad attractions also.
