Carlsbad Ranch Flower Fields Location
History of the Carlsbad Ranch Flowers
The beginnings of what eventually became the Flower Fields site started in the 1920’s. Local resident, Ethan Gage planted ranunculus flower seeds in the agricultural fields near Carlsbad California.
According to the San Diego Union Tribune, “Gage purchased a farm site near South Oceanside and began growing freesias, anemones and gladiolus flowers. With seeds purchased from England, Gage also planted ranunculuses. As years went by, he developed varieties under the Giant Tecolote label, named after the nesting owls he found on his farm.”
Over the years Gage and his neighbors, The Frazee family, cultivated and cross bred the flowers into the unique double petal ranunculus varieties seen at the Flower Fields in Carlsbad today.
The Flower Fields were officially born in 1993 when the prominent San Diego Ecke Family took over Frazee’s operation. Today, more than 150,000 people visit the Flower Fields every year.
