How to Get to Ambuluwawa Tower Sri Lanka From Colombo and Kandy
Travel From Colombo to Ambuluwawa Biodiversity Complex
Traveling from Colombo to Ambuluwawa Tower in Sri Lanka is a bit challenging. Ideally, combine this destination with a visit to Kandy or hill country.
While the total distance from Colombo Airport to Ambuluwawa is only 78 miles, driving times in Sri Lanka are significantly longer and more complicated than in the U.S. Importantly, it is typical to only drive 30 miles per hour on smaller roads, and Google maps are often inaccurate.
Seeking Stamps Tip: I would NOT recommend self driving in Sri Lanka. It’s absolute chaos (and I’m a Southern California driver used to traffic and mayhem)!
Colombo to Ambuluwawa by Private Car:
The most efficient way to reach the white tower is with a private car and driver. Hiring a private car is common and affordable in Sri Lanka. Your driver can drop you off at the ticket booth before the road to the Ambuluwawa Tower entrance.
The journey east from Colombo will take approximately 2.5 to 3 hours, depending on traffic.
Colombo to Ambuluwawa Tower By Train or Bus:
An alternate way to travel from Colombo to Ambuluwawa tower of Sri Lanka, is by train or bus. Sri Lankan transit systems are well connected and simple to use, but they can be congested.
Colombo to Gampola train station: Take a 3 hour ride from Colombo Fort to Gampola station. An alternative route is taking the train from Colombo to Kandy and then travel to the Gampola area. Once you arrive, take a bus or tuk-tuk to Ambuluwawa. It will take about 20 minutes to reach the tower and will cost about 1000 rupees from the Gampola station to Ambuluwawa.
Colombo to Gampola by bus: Take the #19 bus via Peradeniya to Gampola railway station. The trip will take at least 4 hours. The bus drops you off about 4 miles away, so grab a tuk-tuk to get to the tower from Gampola station.

The Road to the Ambuluwawa Tower Entrance
Next, you need to get from the ticket booth up the road to the Ambuluwawa Tower entrance. You can either walk 1.5 miles uphill with an 1800 foot ascent, or take a tuk-tuk. The walk isn’t particularly scenic and it looks dangerous with tuk-tuks zipping by. Take a ride up and save your energy for the stairs you are about to climb!
Seeking Stamps Tip: It’s easy to find a tuk tuk up the road to the Ambuluwawa tower entrance because there are typically several waiting near the parking lot. Bargain so you get a fair price.
Ambuluwawa Biodiversity Complex
First, wander around the 470 acre temple complex and explore the biodiversity of Sri Lanka. According to Ambuluwawa.com there are over 200 types of plants and 126 animal species on Ambuluwawa Mountain ranging from mammals, reptiles, amphibians, birds, and butterflies.
Honestly, Ambuluwawa Tower is the true highlight, so skip the rest if you are limited on time.
Seeking Stamps Tip: Don’t miss the Ambuluwawa Scenic Point. Behind the white spiral tower, you can look out over the surrounding mountains from this almost hidden vantage point. Check it out and soak up the views!

Ambuluwawa Tower Height
You might be wondering about the height of Ambuluwawa Tower. It is a staggering 157.4 feet tall and 1,965 feet above Gampola Town. It’s perched on top of Ambuluwawa Mountain hill at an elevation of 3567 feet which adds to the sensation of feeling sky-high. If you have any issues with heights, this scary tower climb might make your head spin!
Make Your Way Up The White Tower
To begin climbing the spiral stairs, enter directly underneath the tower. Sadly, the graffiti laden interior is damp, humid, and a bit smelly. Hopefully tourism revenue will help fund much needed maintenance of the complex.
As you ascend the tower you reach a viewing platform which provides your first glorious view of the verdant scenery. Next, begin to twist around and around the peculiar building. There are a couple of small, debris-filled areas to duck into when others need to pass. The place is exceptionally narrow as you walk single file squeezing around the uneven stairs.
The Pinnacle of the Scary Tower Climb
Between the dubious construction and the vertigo-inducing heights, the Ambuluwawa Tower in Sri Lanka is not for the faint-hearted. Honestly, this scary tower climb is pretty dang sketchy and you will be gripping the sides of the stupa as you round the corners of each turn. Peering through the jagged slatted railing to the ground far below will make you woozy!
Once you reach the top, you have breathtaking 360 degree panoramic views. In the expansive vistas you will see Adam’s Peak, the Knuckles Mountain range, Bathalegala (Bible Rock), and Piduruthalagala Mountain in the distance.
On your return you will have to alternate navigating the stairs with other tourists. The cramped space is too narrow for passing.

The Best Time to Visit Ambuluwawa Tower Sri Lanka
Ideally, the best time to visit Ambuluwawa is in the dry season during January to April. The best month to visit Ambuluwawa is in February when Gampola weather offers clear skies and the least rain.
If possible, avoid visiting during monsoon season. The rainy Yala Monsoon hits central Sri Lanka in the months of May to August. In addition, the Maha monsoon season is from October to November. It is important to note that Gampola weather in March and April can be scorchingly hot and humid.
Obviously, if you visit during inclement weather, the views will be significantly impacted. When we visited, the misty Gampola weather gave us an eerie experience that made the trip to the top of the spiral stairs even more terrifying! Avoid visiting the white tower when there is lightning. The top of the spiral is a giant metal spire, and possibly a dangerous lightning rod! Yikes!
Seeking Stamps Tip: Plan your visit in the morning when crowds are fewer and the weather is cooler.
What to Wear to Climb Ambuluwawa Tower Sri Lanka
Before you reach the tower, plan what to wear to Ambuluwawa. The stairs are only moderately strenuous, however they are incredibly shallow, narrow and uneven. Also, many of the stairs are slippery with broken tiles. Truthfully, the dilapidated exterior had me questioning whether this climb was a safe decision!
Wear sturdy athletic shoes with good tread. It is also smart to wear comfortable athletic apparel that you don’t mind getting dirty. Large backpacks, purses and camera equipment will impede your ability to squeeze through tight spaces near the top.
Attractions in Gampola
If you have additional time in Gampola, consider a stop to Niyamgampaya Rajamaha Viharaya temple on your route to Kandy City. It’s approximately 2 miles from Ambuluwawa tower on the AB13 highway. The origins of the temple are unknown, however it is believed to have been built before 200 BC. Additionally, there are historic documents stating the Vihara housed the Sacred Buddha Tooth that now resides in the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic in Kandy.
Another thing to do in Gampola is tour the Orange Field Tea Factory. We did not personally view this tea factory, but it is highly rated in Gampola. You can learn about tea manufacturing and taste the delicious tea varieties. Ideally, save your tea tours for Nuwara Eliya or Ella for the best experience.
Nature lovers will enjoy a variety of outdoor activities such as hiking, trekking in the Knuckles Mountains , birding or cycling with Paradise Safari Tours in Gampola.
If you are limited on time, Kandy has much more to offer for accommodations, restaurants and attractions.
Where to Stay in Gampola
As I mentioned previously, Ambuluwawa hotels are limited. I recommend staying in Kandy for more luxurious accommodation options. If you decide to stay overnight in Gampola, check out Mount Havana in Gampola. Mount Havana resort is a boutique property offering stunning mountain views and exceptional service. I did not stay here, but it looks like one of the best Gampola hotels.
Restaurants in Gampola
Facilities are minimal at Ambuluwawa Tower and I did not see any food or drinks available for purchase on site. If you decide to stay in the Gampola area, here are few dining suggestions:
- La Pinchi- Gampola
- Blackline Cafe- Gampola
- Fire Plate Restaurant- Peradeniya
You will have a much wider range of dining options if you continue to Kandy City.
