Whaley House History
At first glance, the Whaley House looks like any other historic home. Built with Greek Revival architecture, the Whaley’s house is adorned with a gorgeous brick facade and bright green shutters. The grand Whaley mansion was constructed in 1857 by Thomas Whaley. At the time, its construction had an exorbitant price tag of $10,000. In addition to being a family home for the Whaleys, it served as a courtroom, the first commercial theater, and a general store.
Contrary to its appearance, the famed Whaley House property has a dark past. The land and surrounding grounds of the home were previously used as an execution site. Thomas Whaley witnessed hangings at the location, but nonetheless proceeded to build his home there. Clearly, people believe this caused the Whaley’s house to be one of the most haunted houses in San Diego!
Execution of Yankee Jim Robinson
One death on the grounds was described as especially gruesome. Thief and suspected arsonist, James W. Robinson (aka Yankee Jim Robinson) was hanged for his crimes. Interestingly, he was a very tall man for the time. He was 6’4 when most men in the 1800’s were averaging 5’5 inches tall. Perhaps this is why the rope used to hang him was grossly underestimated. Instead of an instant death, Yankee Jim suffered in agony. His toes dragged back and forth against the ground as he slowly strangled to death.

Tragedies of The Whaley House San Diego
Much of the history of the Whaley Family and the haunted Whaley House, is based on urban legends and ghost stories. So, what happened at the legendary Whaley House? Before we dive into all the haunted happenings, it’s important to know the members of the family.
Thomas Whaley moved to California during the boom of the California Gold Rush. After great success in San Francisco, he relocated to San Diego and married Anna Eloise DeLaunay. Thomas and Anna Eloise Whaley had six children together: Francis, Thomas Whaley Jr., Anna Amelia, George, Violet Eloise and Corinne. Read more to learn about the family tragedies that led to the Whaley’s house being one of the most haunted houses in San Diego.
Death of Whaley Infant: Thomas Jr:
Sadly, not long after the Whaleys moved into their new home, the first tragedy struck the Whaley family. Thomas Jr. Whaley contracted Scarlet Fever. Tragically, the 18 month old passed away in the upstairs nursery while being rocked in his mother’s arms. This event is truly one of the most heartbreaking tragedies of the Whaley family history.
Whaley House Disasters: Fire and Earthquake:
After the death of Thomas Jr., disaster struck again when a large arson fire demolished the Whaley general store. This prompted the Whaleys to move to San Francisco where they were blessed with three additional children. In 1868, an earthquake prompted the Whaley family to return to their San Diego home.
Death of Thomas W. Tanner:
Then, another tragedy in the Whaley House affected performer Thomas W. Tanner. Tanner rented the theater on the second floor, which was designed for the Tanner Troupe’s live events. On the opening night in December, 150 guests packed into the tiny room upstairs in the Whaley property. Within three weeks of opening, Thomas Tanner died from illness spread during the performances.
Violet Whaley Suicide:
Additionally, their daughter Violet Eloise Whaley struggled with “melancholy” throughout her life. She later married, but her husband was a bankrupt alcoholic and an adulterer. Violet Whaley and George T. Bertolacci divorced a year later, which was scandalous in the 19th century. As a result, Violet was shunned by the community and her sadness and shame became unbearable.
One evening in 1885, Violet Whaley took her father’s gun to the outhouse and shot herself in the chest. Thomas Whaley heard the gunshot and found his daughter bleeding to death. She was alive for several minutes until she succumbed to her injuries. Violet Whaley died in the living room of the Whaley home at the young age of 22 years old.
The Jilted Marriage of Corinne Whaley:
Following Violet’s divorce scandal, Corinne Lillian Whaley found out her fiance called off their engagement. She was set to wed her first cousin, John T. Whaley. Instead she lived in the haunted Whaley House until her death in 1953.
Death of Whaley’s Great-Granddaughter Marion Reynolds:
Finally, another heartbreaking event occurred in 1913. The Whaley’s great granddaughter, Marion Reynolds ingested poison after visiting the Whaley family. According to our tour, the toddler was playing outside and found a jar with a sweet sticky substance inside. After she ingested it, she became violently ill and soon died. It was determined to be a pesticide made with arsenic and honey.

The Fate of the Family and the San Diego Whaley House
After death and scandal tormented the Whaleys, Thomas Sr. moved the family to another home nearby. Subsequently, in 1890, Thomas Whaley, known for his argumentative nature, died of natural causes.
The Whaley House fell into shambles while vacant for almost twenty years. In 1909, Whaley’s son Francis renovated the home. Anna Eloise, Anna Amelia, Corinne, Francis and George moved back into The Whaley House until their deaths.

Haunted Whaley House Paranormal Activity
Haunting of the Whaley House Music Room:
When the Whaley family first moved into their home, they reported hearing heavy footsteps in the house. Guests reported feeling a tightness in their throats when they were near the archway in the music room. Some even noted a red mark or bruise across their necks. That is the very location of the gallows where Yankee Jim was executed years prior. A dark, negative energy is also often reported in the room, thought to be the spirit of Yankee Jim.
Child’s Presence in the Whaley Dining Room:
Furthermore, a child’s presence can be felt in the dining room. Visitors have felt tugs on the hem of their clothing, as a child might do. Apparently, this ghost seems to be attracted to maternal energy, and females are the ones who usually detect this paranormal sensation. Marion, the toddler who died of poisoning, is thought to reside in the dining room where she used to spend time with Anna Whaley.
Inanimate Objects Move and Temperatures Shift in the Whaley House:
In addition to spooky sensations felt in the house, inanimate objects such as chandeliers move, and lights flicker on and off suspiciously. Cool and warm spots can be felt intermittently throughout the house without any heat or cooling source nearby.
Strange Smells in the Whaley House:
Both the ghosts of Thomas and Anna Whaley are thought to be accompanied with strange odors in the Whaley home. Anna Whaley’s ghost is correlated with the scent of her lavender perfume. Her welcoming apparition is often spotted in the parlor or garden. Thomas Whaley’s ghost is witnessed at the top of the stairs. He wears historic clothing and stands in a commanding posture. Guests often report the strong smell of tobacco smoke associated with the ghost of Thomas Whaley.
Haunted Whaley Nursery:
Often, the sound of children’s laughing and a baby crying can be heard coming from the nursery upstairs. Eerie accounts of dolls’ eyes opening and closing on their own have also been reported. Additionally, children’s footsteps have been noted scampering on the wood floors. This is thought to be the ghost of Thomas Jr. who died in infancy. Today, Anna Whaley’s original rocking sits in the nursery… just in case the two spirits want to spend time together.
Is Violet Whaley’s Ghost Looking Out the Window?
During her depression, Violet Whaley often remained forlorn and sheltered in the primary bedroom. Some visitors to the Whaley House have discussed feeling a sensation of profound sadness. A woman has been seen in the window upstairs, despite the museum being closed without anyone inside.
Also, over thirty years ago a police officer was called to the home because neighbors heard a woman’s cries. The officer saw a woman in clothing from the 1800’s smile at him and then vanish into thin air. The apparition is believed to be the ghost of Violet Whaley.
Dolly- the Ghostly Whaley Family Dog:
Last but not least, the ghosts in the home seem to have a spooky pet. This ghostly dog is named Dolly and guests have felt brushes up against their legs and licking sensations that they attribute to the deceased pet.

Recommended Age For The Whaley House Visitors:
The tour itself is not particularly scary, but the suggested minimum age is 13 for the Whaley house tour. The staff does a few “tricks” that I will keep secret to avoid ruining the fun. None of the tweens in our group considered the tour scary. This is a fun activity for any time of year, but especially at Halloween because it is less frightening than a typical haunted house. However, if a spirit is present or your child is easily spooked, you might want to skip this tour. Additionally, suicide and deaths are discussed.
Whaley Museum ADA Accessibility:
Unfortunately, the second story of the house has steep stairs and is not wheelchair accessible. Inside the museum, rooms are narrow and may be difficult to navigate. An audio/visual guide can be provided for guests unable to access the second story.

Our favorite Mexican restaurant in the area is Old Town Mexican Cafe. Their menu items include traditional Mexican cuisine and hand-made tortillas. It’s conveniently located across the street.
What Did We Experience at One of the Most Haunted Houses in San Diego?
To be perfectly honest, we did not think we experienced any paranormal activity while touring the house. Our guide suggested we check our media because images show what we cannot see with the naked eye.
To my disbelief, I captured an image of a woman in the window. See the Whaley House ghost picture below (with the red arrow). I have several images of the location on our tour which did not show the shadowy figure. It’s difficult to trust what you see online, but these are legitimate. We were skeptical we would experience any paranormal activity, but perhaps Violet Whaley was with us after all!
