Is a Mallorca Road Trip Worth Doing?
Although it is the largest of the Balearic Islands of Spain, Mallorca is relatively small. In fact, you can circumnavigate the entire island in a mere six hours. Since mass transit is cumbersome, renting a car will give you unlimited access to roam without time constraints. Without question, a road trip is the best way to see Mallorca.

Where to Road Trip in Mallorca
Fortunately, there are lots of routes around the island of Mallorca. We were based in Palma de Mallorca, and since it is a popular hub for visitors, I will begin there. This itinerary takes you along the west coast to visit some of the best places to go in Mallorca: Valldemossa, Deia and Soller.

Valldemossa
From Palma, plan to drive approximately 25-30 minutes to visit the picturesque town of Valldemossa. We used Google maps which directed us along an easy to follow route along Ma-1110. As you drive, you will enjoy gorgeous vistas of the surrounding Sierra de Tramuntana landscape which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Valldemossa is tiny, with a population of approximately 2,000 residents. It is my favorite place of the three we visited that afternoon because it is so charming! Â Personally, I think the best thing to do in Valldemossa is slow down- enjoy walking along the cobblestone streets, gaze at the unique architecture, and peek into small boutiques.
Seeking Stamps Tip: When you arrive, there are a few small parking lots near the town center. Make sure to get there early if you want to find a parking spot! Plan to spend at least two hours here.
Things to Do in Valldemossa
Valldemossa Charterhouse & Chopin Museum
One of the famous Valldemossa landmarks is visible as you drive along the highway into town. This Carthusian monastery is known as the Valldemossa Charterhouse, or Cartoixa de Valldemossa. It consists of an impressive royal palace built for King Sancho, which dates back to the 1300’s.
During the winter of 1838-1839 Valldemossa’s most notable residents, composer Frédéric Chopin and French writer George Sand, occupied the residence. They sought warm Mallorca weather to aid the health of Chopin, who was believed to be suffering from tuberculosis.
Today, visitors can tour part of the monastery that houses a museum of Chopin memorabilia including manuscripts and his piano. Plus, enjoy the manicured gardens surrounding La Cartuja and the Charterhouse Apothecary (one of the best preserved in Europe). This museum offers a glimpse into the life of one of the world’s renowned composers.
Address for Cartoixa de Valldemossa:
- Plaça Cartoixa, s/n, 07170 Valldemossa, Illes Balears, Spain

Parish Church of Saint Bartholomew
Another must-see attraction in Valldemossa is the Parish Church of Saint Bartholomew. This beautiful church dates back to the 13th century and is a prominent landmark in the heart of Valldemossa. You can’t miss it when you walk into town.
Seeking Stamps Tip: Don’t miss the lush gardens on the back side of the building when you visit.
Address for Iglesia Católica de San Bartolomé:

Hike the Path of the Archduke (Camino de Archiduque)
Nature-lovers can find amazing hiking in Valldemossa, such as the Path of the Archduke. The best place to reach the trail is from the Valldemossa Tourist Center. The trail is not well marked, but it offers breathtaking views of the Mediterranean Sea, Palma, and Soller.
Address for the Oficina Municipal de Turisme de Valldemossa, Spain:
- Av. Palma, 7, 07170 Valldemossa, Illes Balears, Spain
Seeking Stamps Tip: Make sure to wear sturdy shoes and bring GPS to help you find your way on unmarked parts of the trail.
Visit the Port of Valldemossa
Last, drive down to Valldemossa Port for a tranquil escape. It should be noted that the road down to the port is not for the faint of heart! At the bottom, you will find a humble fishing hamlet, a small restaurant, and a rocky beach if you want to take a quick swim.
Address for the Port de Valldemossa:
- Carrer Ponent, 12, 07170 Valldemossa, Illes Balears, Spain
Where to Eat in Valldemossa
- Quita Penas– a small hidden gem worth searching for if you are craving tapas, and local meats and cheese.
- Es Taller Valldemossa– this is the place to go for upscale dining with artistically plated (and delicious) meals.
- Troya Restaurant– For gorgeous views, walk over to Troya Restaurant (even if you don’t dine there). Their menu offers fresh and flavorful skewers of juicy chicken and meat.
- Panaderia y PastelerÃa Ca’n Molinas– this is a fabulous place to grab coffee and a Mallorcan pastry such as a coco de patata.
Seeking Stamps Tip: Of course stop at any of the gelaterias for some gelato on your Mallorca road trip!
Where to Stay In Valldemossa
We found the hotel options in Valldemossa a bit sparse, so I recommend visiting Valldemossa for the day and staying overnight in Deia or Soller.
- Es Petit Hotel de Valldemossa- a quaint boutique resort with old world charm and a serene backdrop.
Address for Es Petit Hotel:
- C/ Uetam 1, 07170 – Valldemossa Mallorca Illes Balears, Spain
Explore Deia, Mallorca
Next on your Mallorca road trip is the alluring village of Deia. It’s approximately six miles and 15-20 minutes from Valldemossa. Deia is a haven for creative types and characterized by its artistic and bohemian charm. It has similar architecture to Valldemossa, but has a more relaxed feeling with fewer crowds.
Best Things to Do in Deia
Son Marroig Museum
On your way to Deia, visit the House Museum of Son Marroig. It was the former home of Archduke Ludwig Salvator of Austria dating back to the 17th century. Visitor’s can soak up the gorgeous ocean and garden views from the property.

Address for Mirador Sa Foradada:
- 07179 Deià , Balearic Islands, Spain
Seeking Stamps Tip: The hike back up from the restaurant is no joke. Bring water and wear sturdy shoes. Plan to spend about 45 minutes to reach the top.

Explore Deia Village
Once you reach town, start by exploring the small village of Deia. Get lost wandering cobblestone streets while you admire the beauty of this fairytale-like town. You can check out small art galleries and shops in this tranquil artist community.
Parish Church of Juan Bautista
If you haven’t reached your limit of churches, stop by the Parish Church of Juan Bautista. This church and cemetery are free to enter. We loved seeing the historic cannons perched over the hillside and memorable views around every turn.
Visit Cala Deia
One of the top things to do in Deia is go to Cala Deia. This popular Deia beach is located at the bottom of a long winding road. We made the assumption that the paid parking near the beach would be full, so we decided to walk about 2 miles down the huge hill. While not a horrible walk, we found ample parking at the bottom and could have spared an hour of walking in our flimsy sandals- oops!
Seeking Stamps Tip: In peak season, the road might be inaccessible without a restaurant reservation because this is one of the most popular things to do in Mallorca, Spain!
Normally, the beach is beautiful here (at least according to social media). Unfortunately, we visited on a windy day, with huge waves and brown, churned seas. If it’s windy when you visit you might want to check the conditions first. Additionally, bring water shoes if you plan to enter the water, since the shore is rocky.
Address for Cala Deia:
- Cala Deià . Ca’N Fusimany, 1. 07179 Deià . Illes Balears, Spain.
Stop By Robert Graves House
On the road between Deia and Soller, you can stop by the Robert Graves Museum (Museum Ca’n Alluny). The famous poet lived here for over 50 years. The museum offers a glimpse into his home with original furnishings and a stunning garden.

- Ctra. Sóller, 6, 07179 Deià , Illes Balears, Spain
Hours of Operation:
- 9:00 am- 4:00/4:30 pm weekdays (It is open later during the summer).
- Admission is 10 Euros for adults and 5 Euros for children under 12.
Seeking Stamps Tip: There is no parking lot for the museum, so plan to walk a few minutes to the entrance.

Where to Eat in Deia
Ca’s Patro March
Luckily, despite horrible conditions at Cala Deia, we ended up dining at Ca’s Patro March restaurant. Ca’s Patro March is one of the best Mallorca restaurants and has a waitlist months ahead of time. It’s no wonder why it’s so popular- it’s literally right next to the ocean and offers stunning views. For reservations, make sure to book very early.
Address for Ca’s Patro March:
- Carrer Sa Cala, 16, 07179 Deia, Mallorca Spain
Seeking Stamps Tip: Despite mixed reviews online, we loved this restaurant. Try their shrimp & goat cheese salad- I still dream of that delicious, creamy, sweet salad! Yum!
El Olivo
Even if you can’t stay overnight at the Belmond, dine at El Olivo Restaurant on the property. Their incredible Mediterranean tasting menu paired with colorful sunset views is worth every penny. Make sure to make reservations in advance.
Address for El Olivo:
- Son Canals, 07179 Deia, Mallorca Spain

Another romantic fine dining experience awaits at Sebastian. Sit under twinkling lights among citrus and olive trees while you gaze at the rocky mountain landscape. Savor each mouth-watering dish that is created with precision and artistry.
Address for Sebastian:
- Calle Felipe Bauza, 2, 07179 Deia, Mallorca Spain
Seeking Stamps Tip: Parking can be tricky to find, so give yourself plenty of time ahead of your reservation.
Where to Stay in Deia
If you plan to stay overnight and are wondering where to stay in Deia, La Residencia, a Belmond Hotel, is the most luxurious hotel in the area. It is definitely a place that oozes romance, but it comes with a hefty price tag.Â
Sóller
Following Deia, drive another quick 25 minutes to Soller. This seaside town is adorable! It offers a large sandy beach, a historic tram, and a plethora of shops and restaurants along its beautiful boardwalk area. Make sure to add Soller to your Mallorca road trip!
Best Things to Do in Sóller, Mallorca
Visit the Port of Sóller
One of the best things to do in Soller is explore the crystal clear sea at the port. Here you can walk along the boardwalk, or soak up the sun at the beach. There are numerous shops and restaurants to grab lunch or cocktails by the sea.
Make Sure to See the Port of Soller From the Sea on a Private Yacht Tour! This Was One of Our Favorite Things to Do in Mallorca!
Take the Tram
No visit to Soller is complete without a ride on the Soller tram! This nostalgic wooden tram originating in 1912, is one of Spain’s oldest trams. Journey from the town of Soller to the port on a scenic 3 mile route with unparalleled views of citrus-dotted hills and the Mediterranean coastline. The relaxing ride takes about 30 minutes and is a nice reprieve from walking!
Seeking Stamps Tip: Buy your tram tickets online and arrive 30 minutes prior to boarding. You can find schedules and information at the link above.
Plaza Constitución
When visiting the town of Soller, an important destination is Plaza Constitución. This is the main square and the location of many local celebrations and festivals. While you visit, gaze at the intricate facade of Banco de Sóller and the Casa de la Vila (town hall).
Parish Church of Saint Bartholomew in Sóller
In the plaza, you can’t miss another of Soller’s famous landmarks- the Parish Church of Sant Bartomeu de Sóller. This awe-inspiring Neo Gothic church dates back to the 13th century. Its most notable feature, the stunning facade, was designed by a disciple of Gaudi, Joan Rubio. For just 2 Euros, the interior is well worth the small entrance price.
Address for the Parish Church of Saint Bartholomew:
- Plaça de sa Constitució, 1, 07100 Sóller, Illes Balears, Spain
Where to Eat in Sóller
Nunu
We didn’t plan where to eat in Soller, so we picked Nunu Restaurant because of its proximity to the beach. Thankfully, the food, service and surroundings were lovely. It’s a great spot to relax and watch the waves lap the shore.
Kingfisher Restaurant
One of the top rated Mediterranean restaurants near the port is Kingfisher Restaurant. It offers upscale dining, a gorgeous backdrop of the boats in the port, and fresh seafood.
Restaurante Luna 36
In town, check out Luna 36 for delicious Spanish and Mediterranean cuisine in a cozy venue close to the town square.
Where to Stay in Sóller
Jumeirah Mallorca
For a large hotel packed with amenities, stay at Jumeirah Mallorca. Perched above the cliffs of Soller, this 121 room hotel has a vantage point to die for, an incredible infinity pool, and full service spa.
Address for Jumeirah Mallorca:
- Calle Belgica S/N, 07108 Port de Soller, Soller, Mallorca Spain

Other Places to Explore If You Have Additional Time
Driving from Palma de Mallorca to Valldemossa, Deia and Soller can easily fill up an entire day (or more). If you are feeling adventurous, here are a few more destinations you can add to your road trip in Mallorca.
Sa Calobra
Continue your journey further north along the winding roads to Sa Calobra. The area is popular for its two main beaches and a haven for cyclists.
Cap de Formentor
Although we were completely exhausted, we decided to continue our drive through Mallorca to the Formentor Peninsula. Cap de Formentor is the northernmost point on the island. Everything we read warned about the treacherous nine mile road, but honestly it wasn’t too bad.
Once we reached the top we had time to check out the lighthouse, just before the sun started to dip below the horizon. Before dark, we headed back to Palma which took about an hour.
In retrospect, I wish we stayed overnight in Deia or Soller so we had more time on our roadtrip. Spending 2-3 days would have allowed us more time to relax and wander. Additionally, I would have loved to spend the day at either Cala Figuera or Cala Formentor beaches.
Seeking Stamps Tip: During the crowded summer month, June to September, the road to the top of Formentor is closed. Shuttles are available from Port de Pollenca.
Important Mallorca Road Trip Essentials
There are so many amazing things to do in Mallorca and public transportation is limited and inconvenient. Maximize your vacation in Mallorca by renting a car. Keep reading for a few considerations you need to review before your trip.
Booking a Rental Car in Mallorca
First, start by renting your car early! During peak travel seasons, cars can be very difficult to reserve.
Next, rent the smallest car you can find. Roads, alleyways, and parking are extremely tight. Get a tiny car (you will thank me later)!
I also suggest renting a car with automatic transmission. Even the most experienced stick-shift drivers will agree the numerous steep hills make driving in Mallorca a challenge.
Get an International Driver’s License
Before driving around Mallorca, it’s important to note that an international driving permit is required in Spain. Don’t panic, there’s no testing involved!
Simply bring two passport photos, an application, and mail it in or go to your local AAA office. In addition, you need to pay a $20 fee and have a valid U.S. driver’s license. Make sure to keep your US driver’s license with you too.
Seeking Stamps Tip: You need to get your international driver’s permit (IDP) before you leave the US.
Have Some Familiarity with Directions and Signs
It’s understandable if you feel intimidated to drive in a foreign country- I was also hesitant to drive abroad for the first time! Other than missing a few turns on roundabouts, getting around the island on your Mallorca road trip is simple. So, I’m sure you can do it too! Here are a few ways to make driving around Mallorca a success:
- Make sure to understand common road signs and roundabouts. Click here for a helpful site with common road signs in Spain.
- Watch out- Google maps will take you down one-way streets. Yes, we learned the hard way-oops!
- We also struggled to get the car GPS to work, so I recommend having a backup on your phone.
- Familiarize yourself with roundabouts before you drive in Mallorca. It seems obvious, but if you miss your turn, just go around again!
Parking Is Very Limited
Throughout Mallorca, parking can be a challenge. It’s essential to start your day trip early to find parking. I suggest arriving before 9 am at the latest, especially during peak travel times.
Seeking Stamps Tip: Make sure to bring coins to pay the parking meter. In blue zones, you can pay via the Palma de Mallorca MobiAPParc app.
