This area was developed in the 1970’s and is known mainly for its serenity, manicured gardens, golf, spas and luxury hotels. It was aptly named “Nusa” (Island) and “Dua” (two) because it consists of two distinct islands.

It should be noted that the seas on this side of Bali are one of the major reasons for staying in Nusa Dua. The world class Nusa Dua beaches are celebrated for their crystal blue water and golden sand. Swimming at Nusa Dua beaches is safe and waves are calm. This side of Bali is the perfect place for families who want to safely enjoy beaches in Nusa Dua.
Here are some of the best beaches in Nusa Dua:
- Samuh Beach
- Nusa Dua Beach (Mengiat Beach)
- Geger Beach
- Pantai Sawangan Beach
- Pandawa Beach
- Gunung Payung Beach
On the other hand, seas in the Seminyak/Legian areas can be quite treacherous and are only recommended for surfers and strong swimmers.

3. Safety and Security Are Important in Nusa Dua, Bali
Differing from the relaxed island vibe, the security is a bit unsettling as you enter Nusa Dua Bali. While it may be unexpected at first, some find it particularly reassuring to see cars entering the premises being screened. Hotel guests must also pass through security when they enter. Nusa Dua places a large emphasis on terrorist prevention so guests can feel safe and secure.
4. Bali Day Trip Destinations Are Convenient From Nusa Dua
Due to its central location, Nusa Dua makes a perfect home base to see many of the top tourist attractions.
First, go see the impressive power of the Indian Ocean at the Nusa Dua Water Blow. This area of jagged rocks is pummeled by waves, creating an impressive show of force. It is easily reached at the end of the peninsula, near the Bali Collection Shopping area.
Consider visiting Serangan Turtle Conservation and Education Center. They specialize in protecting and educating the public about the endangered Hawksbill Turtle. Children will especially love this experience. It’s about a 30 minute drive from Nusa Dua.
Make sure to check out Badung Underwater Cultural Park for an interesting Nusa Dua snorkeling experience. Dive down 36 feet to swim around the reef sculptures.
If you want to spend time in nature, visit West Bali National Park. This is an area of biodiversity, numerous animal species including the famous White Bali Starling bird, and a popular scuba diving location off the coast.
Nestled in between Ubud and the Bali outer islands, Nusa Dua is a perfect stop between the two locations. However, I highly recommend additional days in both Ubud and the Nusa Islands (Nusa Penida and Nusa Lembongan) to really see the highlights of Bali. We used Rocky Fast Cruise to get to the islands and for some tours on Nusa Penida.

5. Nusa Dua Is Convenient For Visiting Temples
In addition to being centrally located for trips to the jungles or islands of Indonesia, Nusa Dua is within ten miles of Uluwatu Temple. You can visit the impressive temple which is perched upon a cliff, two hundred feet from the ocean crashing below. Gather to watch a spectacular Kecak Dancing Show with bold costumes and a ring of fire, as the sun brilliantly sets over the sea.
Seeking Stamps Tip: Arrive at least an hour before the show to secure the best seats. This is generally packed with tourists.
The instagram famous Lempuyang Temple (a.k.a. The Gates of Heaven) is about 3 hours away and is an accessible day trip from Nusa Dua. It is easily recognized as the ornate structure with Mount Agung in the background. This area is comprised of several sanctuaries and usually takes several hours of walking to visit. You are required to receive a blessing to enter.
Seeking Stamps Tip: This is a religious site so remember to cover knees and shoulders. Also, drones are not allowed.
Last but not least, see Tanah Lot Temple which is believed to be from the 16th century. This unique temple is perched precariously on the rocks and is only accessible in low tide. It is about an hour and a half drive from Nusa Dua.

6. Nusa Dua Is Close to Luxurious Shopping and Restaurants
If you plan to do some shopping in Nusa Dua, visit The Bali Collection. This is an excellent place to shop for souvenirs before you fly home. Enjoy a variety of restaurants for dining, or get a fish pedicure (where fish nibble the dead skin off your feet.)
7. Nusa Dua Has World Class Surfing Nearby
Without a doubt, Bali is a surfing Mecca and surfing is one of the main drivers of tourism. While Nusa Dua itself is not ideal for surfing, it is in close proximity to fantastic surfing locations. The southern tip of Bali is loaded with magnificent surf breaks. A surf trip to Jimbaran Bay is a quick 20 minute drive. Seminyak, Kuta and Canggu all have conditions that satisfy different levels of surfing on the island.
The “Bad” Parts of Nusa Dua, Bali
8. Nusa Dua Is Not Considered “Authentic” Bali and It’s Touristy
The number one complaint about Nusa Dua is that it is too touristy and secluded from “authentic” Bali. It is a valid point that you will miss out on authentic experiences if you only stay in a luxurious hotel and never leave the property. As long as you combine day trips and visit other locations in Bali, you will have an opportunity to experience the food, culture and people of Indonesia.
Seeking Stamps Tip: Keep reading down to the “itinerary” section below for recommendations about combining Nusa Dua, Ubud, and the Nusa Islands in a cohesive itinerary.
9. Some Parts of Nusa Dua Are Dangerous for Water Sports
In addition to the complaints that Nusa Dua is overly touristy, a huge negative you might experience is the dangerous conditions in Benoa Bay for water sports. If you are looking for a calm, safe snorkeling spot, this is NOT it.
When we visited, the bay was packed with boats, jet skis zipping by, banana boats and parasailing. Snorkelers and scuba divers were sequestered to a middle section in the bay as chaos swirled by them. I can’t imagine there was much sea life below, given the activity and boat traffic ripping through the area. Please consider skipping these activities here, as they seem extremely unsafe.
In contrast, snorkeling in Nusa Lembongan was serene and filled with amazing marine animals. So, save water sports for the islands (unless it’s less crowded during your visit). Make sure to include island hopping while you visit Bali.
Seeking Stamps Tip: If you plan to try water sports in Nusa Dua Bali, make sure to book directly with your hotel concierge. There are numerous shady sales people on the beach that appear to be affiliated with your beach hotel (but are not).

The “Ugly” Parts of Nusa Dua
10. Trash Is a Huge Problem in Nusa Dua
It is no secret that one of the biggest downsides to visiting Bali, is the massive issue they have with trash washing up on the beaches. Unfortunately, this is an issue that is pervasive throughout Indonesia, and is not specific to Nusa Dua.
Sadly, Kuta, Seminyak, Canggu, and Jimbaran Bay are all subjected to excessive quantities of trash when monsoons wash trash over the Bali Straight from Java. Monsoon Season is typically from early December to late March.
We visited Indonesia over the Christmas/New Year holiday and found Nusa Dua to be in much better condition than we expected. One of the great benefits of having large hotel chains catering to tourists, is their attention to beach maintenance.
Seeking Stamps Tip: Check the conditions of the ocean for the time of year you plan to visit. Bali Nusa Dua is more protected from the tidal rubbish problem during Monsoon Season.
Bali Itinerary Suggestions
Now that you know a little bit about Nusa Dua, you can decide whether to include it in your visit to Bali. Here are some suggestions for planning your Bali itinerary:
First, I recommend heading straight to Ubud after you arrive from the airport. Spend at least 4 days there and then make your way south to visit Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Penida for a few days.
Next, depart from Sanur and visit the islands for 4-5 days. Consider staying on Nusa Lembongan for three nights, which is an excellent home base with a variety of restaurants and accommodations. Nusa Penida is larger in size, but much less developed. I recommend doing 2 separate full day trips from Nusa Lembongan or stay overnight in Nusa Penida. Read more details in the links below.
Finally, end with 2-3 days in Nusa Dua. I personally prefer to be close to the airport prior to departure so I don’t have to stress about any possible transportation complications.
