Map of the Maldives Islands
The lush atolls of the Maldives archipelago are a grouping of approximately 1,200 islands in the Indian Ocean. Undoubtedly, people are often confused where the Maldives are located. The country is part of the Asian subcontinent, near India and Sri Lanka.
These low-lying islands are extremely threatened by climate change as water levels rise. In fact, “80% of the Maldives could become uninhabitable by 2050”, according to multiple reports from NASA and the U.S. Geological Survey. So the time to visit the Maldives is now . . .
Maldives Tips and Basic Travel information
How to Get to the Maldives
Although reaching the Maldives can be challenging, this glorious destination is one hundred percent worth the effort. It is common to fly from the United States through Dubai or Qatar to reach the Maldives. International flights arrive at Velana International Airport (MLE) in the Maldives capital, Male. Once you arrive, personnel from your resort will assist you to the next terminal for your seaplane or boat departure. Keep reading for more information about the sea planes below . . .
If you have the chance, fly to the Maldives with Qatar Airways in their business class Qsuites. They are the most luxurious business class experience we have had with comfortable flat-lying beds, amazing food and a large wine list.

Language in the Maldives
The majority of Maldivians speak Dhivehi, but English is commonly spoken. We did not have any language barriers during our stay in the Maldives.
Currency in the Maldives
The currency of the Maldives is the Maldivian Rufiyaa, however, the US Dollar is widely accepted. Maldivian currency is not available in the United States, so a Maldives tip is to change currency once you arrive.
Seeking Stamps Maldives Tips: We never changed any currency and paid with credit cards during our stay. It may not be necessary to have any currency, but check with your resort to make sure.

Best Months to Travel to the Maldives
Without a doubt, you want to enjoy the balmy Maldives beaches when the weather is best. Peak travel is December to April during the Maldives dry season. Flights to the Maldives and hotels are more expensive during this time, especially over the Christmas/New Year holidays.
To beat the crowds and save money, consider visiting during shoulder season in the Maldives. During the months of May and June, weather is described as “unsettled”. Yet, even on days when it rains you typically still have several hours of sunshine.
The Maldives wet season is July to November and you may find great travel deals, but you run the risk of more rain. Historically, October is the wettest month. It is important to note that there isn’t much to do if you have cloudy, rainy weather.
Seeking Stamps Maldives Tips: Rain does not typically deter me from off-peak travel, but it’s worth it to pay the premium for better weather in the Maldives. Personally, I think it’s too far to travel and too expensive to risk getting stuck inside. My number one Maldives tip is to go during the dry season when you plan a trip to the Maldives.

How Long To Stay in the Maldives
Due to its challenging accessibility from the U.S., spend a minimum of 5-7 nights on your Maldives vacation. It’s likely you will have jet lag for a day or two, so factor that in. If you plan to spend two weeks or more, consider staying in more than one Maldives hotel to keep things interesting.

How Much Does it Cost to Stay in the Maldives
I’m not going to lie, it is really expensive to visit the Maldives. International airfare, seaplanes, resorts, activities, food and alcohol are PRICEY! Don’t fret, you can expect a great selection of rooms in the $400-500/night price range and more luxurious options in the $1000-$2000/night price range. I promise you will have an amazing time even if you don’t have a water slide like you’ve seen on Instagram!
Many resorts have the option for full board or half-board meals. Read through the inclusions to decide what works best for you. If full board includes alcohol and you like to knock the cocktails back on vacation, it might save you money in the long run. In our resort, one cocktail was $40 . . . yikes! Nonetheless, we chose the half board option, and felt like we had more than enough to eat during brunch and dinner.
Make sure to honor your budget and choose a resort you can afford. Remember to factor in daily tips for your housekeeping staff and personal butler (if you have one).
How Much To Tip YOur Butler In The Maldives
If you are trying to figure out how much to tip your butler in the Maldives, it can be confusing. It is recommended to tip of $10-$50 dollars per day or at least 5% of your room bill (for higher end resorts). Additionally, base your gratuity on how often you use the butler’s services.
Seeking Stamps Tip: Don’t forget to tip housekeeping $5-10 dollars per day.
Maldives Cultural Considerations
The predominant Maldives religion is Islam. Therefore, the country has some important cultural considerations to familiarize yourself with before you arrive.
Importantly, do not bring alcohol, pork products or pornography to the country. These items are illegal and airport security intentionally searches bags for these items. Alcohol is banned in local communities and Male, but on the tourist islands there are no issues with drinking alcohol.
It should be noted that locals dress conservatively with knees and shoulders covered. Out of respect, consider dressing conservatively during your arrival and departure in the Maldives. Once you reach your resorts, beachwear is fine. Cover-ups are preferred once you leave the beach and pool, but bikinis are allowed.
Important Maldives Holidays to Consider
When planning your Maldivian vacation, double check the dates for Ramadan and religious holidays. As a tourist, you probably won’t be affected by Ramadan during your stay on the islands, but for locals it is a month of prayer and reflection. Muslims fast without food and water from dawn to dusk. If you are in Male, shops and restaurants will be impacted. An important Maldives tip is to pay attention to local holidays.
What To Pack for the Maldives
As a hot and humid climate, you will want to wear comfortable, loose fitting clothing. Fortunately, the weather rarely dips below 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Just make sure to check whether your resort has a dress code for their restaurants.
For women, pack several bathing suits, swim cover-ups, and long sundresses. Evenings can be a bit windy so include hair accessories to wear your hair up if that bothers you. Maldives are islands of barefoot luxury, so leave your heels and wedges at home. Between uneven wood planks on walkways and sandy floors, choose stylish flats instead.
Men can wear shorts and polo-style shirts for dinner. Shorts, flip-flops and trunks are fine for daytime.
Additionally, pack mosquito repellant, reef-safe sunscreen, a few hats, a dry bag and a rash guard for snorkeling. The UV rays are strong here and you want to be sun-kissed, not sunburned. Don’t forget to bring your GoPro Camera for underwater footage!
Seeking Stamps Maldives Tips: Seaplanes are sweltering hot until the the air conditioning starts up. Wear something to keep you cool.

Tips For Choosing Your Resort
The Maldives are unique because there is typically just one resort per island. Since there are hundreds of islands, that means hundreds of resorts to choose from!! Agh- it is SO difficult to decide where to stay in the Maldives!
In contrast to other travel locations, you won’t be able to go “next door” for a variety of meals or activities. Therefore, it is important to do your research and make sure the Maldives beach resort you chose has enough options to keep you happy during your vacation. Keep reading for a list of questions to help you narrow down your hotel choices. . . .
1. What is Your Maldives Travel Budget?
When starting to plan your Maldives vacation, the most realistic place to start the planning process is to decide on your budget. Resorts in the Maldives can range in prices by thousands of dollars. Alcohol and food are very expensive- so be realistic. Spending what you can reasonably afford will be more enjoyable than stressing over every bill during your vacation.
2. Do You Prefer a Boat or Seaplane to Reach Your Maldives Beach Villa?
Importantly, when choosing your resort, think about whether you prefer to get there via plane or boat. Boats tend to be less expensive, but skip them if you have motion sickness. On the other hand, seaplane views are breathtaking, however the price is steep. Seaplane transfers typically cost $300-$1000 per person. Seaplanes also function like a taxi, so you may have to wait while dropping off passengers at other resorts.
Make sure to verify whether the expense of the plane is included in your Maldives package. We flew via seaplane and I highly recommend the experience if it’s within your budget. The two seaplane companies are Transmaldivian Airways and Manta Air for Maldives flights.
Seeking Stamps Maldives Tips: Seaplanes only fly during daylight hours, so you need to factor that in when you plan your trip to the Maldives.
3. What Size Resort Do You Prefer?
Next, think about what you envision for your vacation regarding your Maldives resort size. Are you hoping for a Robinson Crusoe vibe where you feel like you are on a deserted island or do you prefer a lively atmosphere? Do you want a small, secluded resort or a larger one? Check out how many rooms your resort has to help guide your decision.
4. What Room Type Do You Want? Garden Room, Beach Villa or Over-Water Villa?
During your stay in the Maldives, you will probably be spending a fair amount of time enjoying your villa. Honestly, you can’t go wrong with any room choice and your budget will help guide you with what works best. An important Maldives tip I recommend is booking an over-water villa with a private plunge pool, if you can afford it. Nothing beats the tranquility of relaxing in the privacy of your overwater bungalow pool with the gorgeous sea as the backdrop. It is worth every penny!
Seeking Stamps Maldives Tips: Think about whether you prefer a sunrise or sunset room and request your preference when booking.
5. Which Maldives Aesthetic Do You Prefer?
Another factor to help narrow down where to stay in the Maldives, is the aesthetic of the rooms at each resort. Do you like light and bright decor, or rooms with rustic island vibes? A huge Maldives tip is to browse sites like TripAdvisor and look at “traveler photos” (instead of professional hotel photos). Spend the time looking at photos online to see which aesthetic suits your taste.
6. Do You Prefer a Hotel With Kids or Without?
Importantly, think about whether you want to be in a resort where children are allowed? If you are on a vacation with extended family, you will have different desires than honeymooners. If you are traveling with kids, look at what types of activities are offered. The Maldives are very remote and you want your kids to be happy and entertained, so you can relax! If you are on a romantic vacation, getting splashed in the pool by kids cannon-balling might be super annoying. A Maldives tip I suggest for couples, is to choose a resort without children.
7. What Water Sports and Activities Do You Want?
Without a doubt, look at what types of activities your resort offers. Snorkeling, kayaking, scuba diving, jet skis, catamarans, paddle boards and fishing are common options. Ask whether water sports are included, or incur an additional price. If you are a scuba diver, does the resort have a close dive center, or will you have to take a boat to a neighboring island to get your gear?
8. Is a House Reef at Your Maldives Hotel a Priority?
Do you want a house reef for snorkeling right off your private deck? One of our main priorities was to be able to snorkel in the house reef from our water villa. The convenience of snorkeling any time you want is fabulous and is an important Maldives tip. It’s a great bonus if your resort includes free snorkel gear so you can go whenever the mood strikes.
9. What Unique Marine Life Do You Want To See?
Lastly, if you plan to snorkel or scuba dive in the Maldives, consider what marine life you want to see. Areas such as Hanifaru Bay in the Baa Atoll UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and the South Ari Atoll offer world class experiences with large marine life such as whale sharks and manta rays. Visits here should definitely be on your Maldives bucket list! A time saving Maldives tip is to stay near these amazing spots instead of going back and forth in boats.
Seeking Stamps Maldives Tips: June to November is prime time to visit Hanifaru Bay when monsoons bring plankton to the area attracting mantas and whale sharks. An important Maldives tip is to plan a trip to the Maldives when you can see these amazing large marine animals!

After much deliberation, we chose to stay at Milaidhoo luxury boutique resort. This five star Maldives resort was built in 2016 and is in close proximity to the Baa Atoll Biosphere Reserve. The main attractions of this resort are its healthy in house reef and on-site PADI dive center. It has 50 overwater and beach villas, so it’s lively but not too crowded. Plus, only children age 9 and up are allowed so the property felt extremely peaceful.
Milaidhoo pampers their guests with amenities such as private butlers, a gym, free daily yoga, luxurious full service spa and several top-notch restaurants. How Do the Maldives Compare to Bali, Thailand, the Seychelles and Bora Bora?
If you are struggling to decide between the Maldives, Bali, Thailand, the Seychelles and Bora Bora, I am envious! You can’t go wrong with any of them! I honestly love every one of these countries and would return in an instant!
Maldives, Bora Bora and Seychelles are isolated, serene, and tend to be more expensive to visit. They offer stunning scenery, luxurious resorts and jaw-dropping, clear, blue water. These destinations are fabulous for honeymooners with the goal of relaxation, water sports and secluded romance. One huge perk of visiting Bora Bora is the shorter flight time compared to Maldives and Seychelles.
Thailand and Bali have many cultural sights to visit, so if you are looking for a more active vacation these are better options. One huge perk of Thailand and Bali is that they are much cheaper travel destinations. The downside is these developing countries tend to have trash, traffic, and chaos in the larger cities. Bali beaches are also beautiful, but I would rank Maldives, Bora Bora and Seychelles as more pristine with their white sand and clear water. Additionally, the food in Thailand and Bali is SO delicious! If you want more to do and see, such as temples, waterfalls, and restaurants, Thailand and Bali have more to offer.
