Problems When Traveling: Issues With Travel Documents
1. Your Passport Expires Soon
Hopefully, every international passenger knows they need a valid passport to travel. However, many first time travelers don’t realize that many countries require 3-6 months of passport validity past their travel dates. An expired passport is one of the biggest travel problems you want to avoid!
European countries that are part of the Schengen Agreement, allow for entry with 90 days of validity past your departure left on your passport.
Additionally, make sure you have enough blank pages left in your passport book.
For more information on passport requirements, check out information about the country you plan to visit here.
SOLUTION:
- Check your passport expiration date well in advance of traveling. Click here to renew your passport. If you are short on time- expedite your passport in 2-3 weeks. Check your local area for expedited passport services that may offer a 24 hour passport renewal. You don’t want to make this rookie mistake while traveling abroad!

2. Forgetting a Travel Visa
Importantly, it is imperative to know visa requirements by country. Sometimes travel visas are available in the airport, and other times you will be denied entry into the country without one.
SOLUTION:
- Avoid Visa issues and immigration problems. Don’t make this travel mistake- check whether you need a travel visa and how long it will take to get one.
Packing Issues While Traveling
3. The Problem of Packing for Multiple Climates
If you are visiting multiple climates on your vacation, it can be a challenge to pack. I have had vacations, such as our trip to South Africa where I needed rugged safari clothing for cold weather, plus beach vacation attire for the Seychelles in the same trip. To make matters worse, our luggage allowance was very small.
SOLUTION:
- Pack clothing for different climates in separate packing cubes. That way it’s easy to find what you need in each climate without rifling through your entire suitcase.
- If possible, try wearing items more than once. For example, use t-shirts as base layers for cold destinations that you can wear alone in warm temperatures. Scarves, beanies, and gloves are also great ways to stay warm without adding too much bulk to your luggage. If possible, wear heavier coats on the plane to save space.

4. Exceeded Luggage Weight Limits
One of the worst travel hassles is arriving at the airport and realizing your bag is overweight. Excess baggage fees can really add up if you aren’t careful. Cue the frantic shuffling of items while your undies fall onto the airport floor. That’s no way to start your vacation!
Clearly, it’s a travel mistake to over pack your luggage. Not only is it inconvenient to haul extra weight around, but over packing also leads to clutter in your hotel room. More items to manage also makes it more likely to misplace your belongings. Do yourself a favor and limit what you bring for your vacation.
SOLUTION:
- Be realistic about what you need and what you will actually wear
- An inexpensive travel scale can save you stress and potential excess baggage fees. Avoid the mistake of heavy bags by weighing them first!

Traveling Problems: Flight Mishaps
5. Booking a Bad Seat On Your Flight
There’s no question that plane seats are getting tighter and less comfortable. If you can’t fork out the cash for an upgrade, there are still ways to maximize your comfort on the airplane.
SOLUTION:
- Before you make your seat selection, check out the free website Seat Guru to find out how to get the best seats on a plane. Just input the aircraft information and they warn you about high traffic areas, seats that don’t recline, or other limited flight amenities.
6. Getting Stuck in Airport Security
If you travel often, it’s convenient to enroll in TSA Pre✓®:, CLEAR® and/or Global Entry. These programs significantly reduce the time you spend waiting in lines and can make the difference between making your flight or connection.
TSA Pre✓® gives you a fast-track line through security in domestic airports. You do not have to remove jackets, laptops, shoes or liquids, which reduces stress and hassle when going through security. It costs $85 to enroll.
CLEAR® is another option that expedites you through security. CLEAR technology uses an eye scanner and fingerprints to identify you. It is the most expensive of the programs at $189 to enroll.
Global Entry includes enrollment in TSA Pre✓®, so it’s really worth the investment to enroll and reduce barriers to travel. Some credit cards even waive fees for enrollment. Read more about the global entry and TSA Precheck application process and fees.
Seeking Stamps Tip: Global Entry appointments can be a challenge to find, so use this hack for global entry appointments.
SOLUTION:
- Enroll in TSA Pre✓®:, CLEAR® and/or Global Entry before you travel to avoid common problems with long security lines.
7. Missed Flights or Flight Delays
Missed flights and flight delays are among the top 10 travel problems that can turn your vacation plans upside down. Flight delays can be incredibly frustrating, especially when they lead to less time at your destination. Weather-related disruptions are some of the most common reasons for both missed flights and flight delays.
SOLUTION:
- When faced with missed flights or extended delays, dealing with airline customer service representatives becomes crucial in finding suitable solutions for rebooking or compensation.
- Generally missed flights are not refundable, but check the terms of your ticket with the airline. Believe it or not, some airlines have “flat tire policies” that do offer some compensation for things out of your control (such as a flat tire).
- For flight delays, it’s important to know your rights as an airline passenger. Then work with the airline to figure out what if you are rerouted or wait for your original flight to depart. We were grounded on a flight once because of weather, but we worked with the airline to fly to Seattle instead of San Diego where we could still get home in a timely manner.
Travel Difficulties: Accommodation Issues
8. Travel Challenges With Third Party Reservations
One of the biggest travel problems is making reservations on third party travel websites. No one wants to endure hours of travel only to arrive and the hotel doesn’t have a record of your reservation. Trust me, it happens! The best plan is to book directly with hotels, tour companies, and airlines.
SOLUTION:
- I know it’s tempting to save a few dollars, but I always advise booking reservations directly with the airline or hotels instead of sites such as Priceline, Orbitz, Expedia, etc. It’s ok to search for deals on the discount sites, but make sure to go to the main page of the hotel or airline when you book your reservations.
- If you book through a third party, contact the hotel/airline directly to ensure they have a record of your reservation before you leave. Also carry printed information with your reservation information.
9. Problems With Your Hotel
There are all sorts of annoying travel problems that might impact your accommodations. From overbooked hotels, unsightly rooms, or accommodations in unsafe areas- you don’t know what surprise is waiting for you when you check in.
SOLUTION:
- Do your research before you book hotels to make sure the area, style, and quality are what you prefer. Read reviews- especially the negative reviews and look for common trends. If multiple travelers report the same issue, steer clear.
- Bring printed copies of your hotel details to prove that you have a reservation.
10. Finding Bed Bugs When Traveling
Discovering bed bugs in a hotel room can be a distressing experience. However, it’s crucial to take immediate action to avoid bringing these unwanted guests back home with you.
Look for dark stains or spots on the mattress and sheets, tiny bloodstains, discarded exoskeletons, or an unpleasant musty odor. If you notice any of these indicators, it’s important to address the issue promptly. Inform the management immediately. and request a change of rooms away from the infested area.
SOLUTION:
- When traveling, prevent bed bugs from hitchhiking home with you. Keep your suitcase off the floor and avoid placing belongings on upholstered furniture where bed bugs might hide.
- If exposed to bed bugs, wash all clothing items immediately in hot water (at least 60°C/140°F). High heat kills both adult bed bugs and their eggs effectively.
Travel Problem: Dealing With Lost or Damaged Items
11. Lost Luggage
Picture this: you’ve just arrived at your dream destination after an exhausting journey. You eagerly wait at the luggage carousel, as minutes pass. Panic starts creeping up when your luggage is nowhere in sight. Welcome to the dreaded travel mishap of lost luggage!
Lost luggage can turn any trip into a nightmare. It happened to me on a trip to New York and it’s a frustrating experience that can leave even the most seasoned traveler feeling helpless and stressed out.
SOLUTION:
PREPARE BEFORE YOU TRAVEL-
- Create a rough inventory of what’s packed in each suitcase along with photographs or videos of valuable items and your luggage. This will help in providing proof when filing a claim or describing your lost bag to the airline.
- Consider the most difficult items to replace if your luggage is missing and keep these with you. If you are on a beach vacation, throw your bikini in your carry-on. If you are going to a cold weather destination, keep your thick coat with you.
- Always pack essential items like medications, toiletries, electronics, chargers, important documents, passports, valuables, jewelry, and spare clothes in your carry-on bag.
- Use Apple Air Tags to monitor the whereabouts of your bag’s location.
IF YOUR LUGGAGE IS LOST-
- First head to the airport counter to report your missing baggage right away. Provide them with detailed information regarding the appearance of your bag, its contents, and any distinguishing features.
- If you have travel insurance, contact them immediately to report the loss and file a claim for reimbursement of lost items or compensation.
12. Missing Or Forgotten Essential Items
Forgetting to pack something essential is a common travel related problem. Unfortunately, it happens to just about everyone! It’s easy to leave items behind- especially in the bathroom or hotel safe.
SOLUTION:
- Make a list of everything essential you need to pack and place everything next to your luggage. Set phone reminders to grab last minute items such as phone chargers or your toothbrush. Travel is hectic, so don’t rely on your memory.
- If you forget something, try the local store or contact the front desk at your accommodation to see if they can help find what you are missing. The concierge has saved the day more than once when I forgot travel adapters or toiletries.
13. Losing Important Documents Such as Passports and Visas
A lost passport is one of the scariest travel issues for tourists. It happens more often than you think and there are solutions.
SOLUTION:
- Before you travel, save Embassy information on your phone and print it in case you lose essential items.
- First, try not to panic and make sure your passport or visa isn’t tucked away somewhere.
- Then you need to report your passport lost or stolen and wait for a replacement.
Health and Safety Problems While Traveling
14. Avoid Dangers Abroad
Without question, it’s important to stay safe while traveling in our ever-changing world. One way to do that is to receive travel advisories, alerts for natural disasters, and news of safety concerns from the U.S. Department of State.
Once enrolled, you will be notified of issues in the country you’re visiting. During a trip to Sri Lanka during the recent economic crisis, there was civil unrest and riots in the capital. We received a notification from STEP and changed our hotel reservation to avoid the area.
In case of an emergency, the US government and family members can also locate you faster. Best of all, it’s free!
SOLUTION:
- Some of the biggest travel problems are safety and security abroad. One way to do this is to Enroll in S.T.E.P. (Smart Traveler Enrollment Program) from the U.S. Department of State to reduce those concerns.
15. You Forgot to Buy Travel Insurance
Although travel insurance can be costly, it is essential to avoid a travel mistake that can risk your health and/or incur costs of thousands of dollars. No one anticipates needing medical care abroad, but accidents DO happen. Your US medical insurance will not cover medical problems abroad.
Make sure to see what is covered in the fine print, but do get some basic coverage before you travel. The more remote your destination, the more insurance you should purchase in the event you need to be medically evacuated.
SOLUTION:
- Don’t make the travel blunder of skipping travel insurance!

16. Forgetting Required Vaccinations and Travel Medicine
Importantly, verify what vaccinations are required before you travel. The requirements vary from country to country. Some necessitate anti-malarial medications and yellow fever vaccinations. Covid vaccinations might be required for entry in some foreign countries.
If you are traveling to an area with malaria or zika virus don’t forget to pack DEET mosquito repellent. Malaria is endemic in many parts of the world, and it can be lethal.
SOLUTION:
- You can visit your primary care physician or Passport Health Travel Clinic to ensure you have everything you need to travel abroad.
- Travel medicine specialists can update vaccines, such as tetanus and hepatitis, and can prescribe antibiotics for travelers diarrhea to bring with you.
17. Getting Sick While Traveling
If you travel often, you will eventually experience the misery of getting sick while traveling. Our family all had stomach problems when travelling in Peru and I was thankful I have plenty of over-the-counter medications to get us through.
Additionally, consider bringing anti-nausea medications, antidiarrheal medications, pain relievers, electrolyte powder and anti-itch medications. (*This is not medical advice, so check with your personal doctor to see if these are right for you.*)
SOLUTION:
- The best way to prevent illness is to wash your hands often. I suggest keeping hand sanitizer on you at all times.
- Use precautions such as avoiding drinking/drugs abroad
- Stay well hydrated
18. Consuming Contaminated Food and Water
Before you slurp away from the tap and have dire consequences, avoid the travel blunder of horrible stomach upset (or severe disease) by ensuring the tap water is safe to drink in the country you visit.
In addition, make sure to choose the foods you consume wisely. A huge travel fail is consuming contaminated food and contracting food poisoning. Not only can this impact your vacation, but it can make you gravely ill (but, you bought that travel insurance, RIGHT?!). Contaminated food can expose you to bacteria, such as salmonella, parasites, toxins, heavy metals, and even deadly viruses such as mad cow disease. Yikes!
SOLUTION:
- Here is more information about foodborne illness– check the country you plan to visit in advance to know whether to avoid items such as produce, street food and more.
19. Health Emergencies or Medical Issues Abroad
Hopefully you never need to cope with health emergencies or medical issues when you travel. However, travelers can face issues with altitude sickness, allergies, dehydration, or broken bones.
SOLUTION:
- Before you leave for your vacation, find emergency information for each country including their “911” equivalent and local hospital locations.
- You can also call the front desk at your accommodations for assistance in case of emergencies.
Money Problems When Traveling
20. Currency Exchange Issues
Have you landed in a foreign country and tried to exchange currency only to realize everything is closed? I sure have and it was a painful experience. The last thing you want to do is wander through the city searching for an exchange kiosk or ATM.
SOLUTION:
- Double check the hours/days of operation of currency exchange locations
- Order currency through your bank ahead of time so you don’t have to hassle with it right when you arrive.
- Verify that your ATM will work in the country you are visiting
- Inform your bank that your will be abroad
21. Unexpected Fees or Expenses
Another travel problem is blowing your budget with unexpected travel expenses and fees. From hotel fees, baggage fees, tipping and more it’s easy for these incremental charges to add up. You certainly don’t want to accrue any financial problems when traveling.
SOLUTION:
- Check the fine print of hotel reservations for resort fees and other add-ons
- Pay attention to luggage allowances
- Check for local tipping customs
22. Local Travel Scams & Pickpocketing
There are tons of common tourist mistakes you can avoid with just a few minutes of effort. Before you head out the door to sightsee, do a quick google search of common tourist scams. This can save you from a variety of travelling problem- from pickpockets taking your money in Spain or an overpriced tuk-tuk ride in Bali.
SOLUTION:
- Familiarize yourself with travel scams and thefts targeting tourists.
23. Cell Phone Roaming Charges & Fees Abroad
Do you want to return home from a fabulous vacation and get a cell phone bill with hundreds of dollars of roaming fees and unexpected charges? No way! Make sure to avoid this travel mistake!
SOLUTION:
- Call your cell phone provider and see what your options are for service abroad. Alternatively, you can pick up a SIM card after you land.
- When in doubt, keep your phone on airplane mode to avoid this common travel issue.
24. Credit Card Charges & International Fees
Next, figure out whether your credit cards or atm cards will incur fees abroad. Here is a list of some great travel cards without fees.
It is always a good idea to avoid problems with your credit cards abroad, by contacting the companies and setting up travel alerts. This prevents your card being denied and can prevent fraud if unexplained charges occur during your trip.
SOLUTION:
- A quick phone call to your credit card company can save you from unexpected fees after you arrive home from your vacation.

Problems When Traveling: Transportation Issues
25. Confusing Transportation Once You Arrive
Even the most seasoned traveler can feel fatigued after a long-haul flight. Once you finally land, you might not have the brain power to figure out the best route to your hotel.
SOLUTION:
- Pre-book transportation from the airport or plan your route before you travel. Chances are, you will be grateful you don’t have to spend more time and energy on these tasks after arrival.
26. Getting Lost In an Unfamiliar City
We have all been there- wandering the streets aimlessly, staring at GPS and trying not to panic when you get lost in a new city.
SOLUTION:
- Familiarize yourself with directions before you start wandering.
- Take screenshots of your maps, in case you lose wifi.
- Keep addresses and phone numbers of your destinations on your phone
- Bring portable chargers and use low-power mode to preserve your battery
Travel Problems At Your Destination
27. Holidays Events and Closures at Your Destination
It’s horrible to find out the main attraction you want to visit is closed during your trip. Holidays can also impact hotel prices, the ability to access local transportation and more. We learned this the hard way after booking our trip to Sri Lanka and realized we were traveling in a location impacted by their Sinhalese New Year. This travel “don’t” can really stifle your plans!
SOLUTION:
- Before you make ANY vacation plans, double check the holiday calendar for the region you plan to visit.
28. Unrealistic Itineraries
Another common travel problems is having an unrealistic itinerary. If you pack too many activities in one day, you end up being overtired and stressed out. Plan your activities and factor in jet lag, travel times to and from each location, time in lines, bathroom breaks and meals.
On the contrary, don’t fail to do enough planning and waste your vacation time trying to decide where to go. Plan ahead, double check days and hours of operation in advance.
SOLUTION:
- Read helpful blogs like Seekingstamps.com to plan your itinerary.
- Map out how far attractions are from one another and group them by location
- Pay attention to the infrastructure- sometimes it takes much longer to travel in a new country than you are used to.
29. Dealing with Crowded Tourist Attractions or Traveling at Peak Season
Have you ever planned the “perfect” itinerary with all the best attractions in the city, only to show up and see a line down the street? Or maybe the venue was sold out and you couldn’t see something on your bucket list? That almost happened to me when I realized I needed to buy Park Guell and La Sagrada tickets before I went to Spain.
SOLUTION:
- Check the peak travel season of your destination.
- Book reservations months in advance of the places you want to see most
Cultural Misunderstandings & Language Barriers
30. Language Barriers in Foreign Countries
It can feel helpless if you have language barriers abroad. It can make directions, shopping, dining and even finding a bathroom difficult. Learning the local language is educational and can be really important if you need help abroad.
SOLUTION:
- Make sure to learn some basic phrases such as “hello”, “please”, “thank you”, “do you speak English”, and directions such as “right/left” in case you get lost. It’s always smart to learn the word “help” in case of emergencies.
31. Cultural Misunderstandings and Etiquette Blunders
Absolutely, behave in a courteous and respectful manner while in a foreign country. For example, it is very disrespectful in Buddhist countries to take selfies or turn your back to statues of Buddha. In other countries, such as the Maldives, if you bring meat products or alcohol into the country you can have them confiscated. Don’t make the rookie travel mistake of importing banned drugs or get drunk in public- you might get thrown in jail.
SOLUTION:
- It is imperative to do a little research about local customs before your arrival to prevent culture shock, and avoid misunderstanding about local customs and etiquette.
32. Wearing Culturally Inappropriate Clothing
Throughout the world, expectations and norms around apparel can differ. Be mindful of what is considered appropriate. If you visit temples or religious sites, plan to cover knees and shoulders and remove your hat. It is a huge disappointment and inconvenience to be turned away at a top tourist site because you are not dressed in proper attire. Also, women may need to dress more conservatively to avoid unwanted male attention. When we visited Dubai, I made sure to dress conservatively to respect local customs.
SOLUTION:
- Read about the destination you place to visit and familiarize yourself with what clothing is appropriate.
Other Miscellaneous Travel Problems
33. Weather Issues with Traveling
It goes without saying, but bad weather conditions can put a damper on travel plans. Unfortunately, even with the best plans you have to deal with poor weather.
SOLUTION:
- Research typical weather patterns for the place you plan to visit
- Prepare for the elements with proper clothing and gear
- Wear sunscreen to prevent nasty sunburns
- Find indoor attractions, such as museums, to wait out bad weather
34. Huge Travel Problem- Engaging in Unethical Tourism
Importantly, it is essential to avoid irresponsible and unethical travel activities. Here is a list of ten unethical travel experiences to skip during your travels.
SOLUTION:
- Do not book tours to pet tigers or ride elephants abroad. Be mindful of not purchasing ivory or other souvenirs that harm animals.
35. Lost Photos
Last, but not least, one of the biggest travel mishaps is losing photos and videos of your vacation because you didn’t back them up. Obviously, losing photos from your dream vacation is a huge travel blunder you don’t want to experience.
SOLUTION:
- Make a point to backup your photos daily, just in case you misplace your phone or camera during your trip.

I’m literally waiting to renew my passport right now, it can be easy to forget to do! Thanks for sharing this list!
It seems like a no-brainer, but it is easy to forget to renew passports.
All great tips – and some of the advice can help avoid some nasty experiences. Thank you!
Thanks! I appreciate the positive comment.
It is so true about the tourist trap. Once we were so close to end up eating in one of them and luckily we decided to take a detour and eat in a much better place and so glad that I did. Later came to know that the other place had very bad reviews.
That happens so often, right? I’m glad you found a better place to eat!
I agree with third-party websites. I went through a horrible and stressful experience when my cousin canceled her trip, I went solo, only to find they had a record of her ticket on a flight from London to Italy and didn’t have mine. I had to purchase another ticket on the spot to get on the flight. But seeing as it was their mistake I was reimbursed.
You are so fortunate you could be reimbursed!
Very guilty of pushing my luck with flight connections. Recently missed my connecting flight at London Heathrow and if my flight from Paris to Malta wasn’t running 30 minutes late, I would have missed that as well, lol!
I’m happy it worked out for you! I’m always too nervous to risk it!
Had that happen before! Booked on a third-party site, got to the hotel, and they didn’t have my reservation. Luckily they had a room and honoured the price.
Phew! You are so fortunate you could still get a room!
Some amazing tips! I’ve been lucky with third-party sites, but I shouldn’t rely on them too much haha.
